Ipswich Spy has some background on the lying that goes on in the Labour leaflets about “Tory cuts” on areas that the Tories have repeatedly said that they won’t touch.
It’s hard to overstate how important these, well, lies have been on shoring up Labour’s support. It can be fairly pointed out that this is scaring the most vulnerable sections of society but Labour can’t stop now, they will simply be wiped out.
Harriet Harman’s response to Ben Gummer showed that they have convinced themselves that blatant lies are OK as you “can’t trust the Tories as far as you can throw them”. That allows anything to be done in the name of the greater good, and makes considerations such as ethics to be something only the Tories should worry about.
This should bring home to Labour activists why Gordon Brown is so damaging to the country. It sounds a stretch, but follow my logic.
It’s going to take years for the Labour Party to recover any trust after these lies, and the justification for them, sink in. Every Labour leaflet for a couple of years will simply be dismissed as a Labour lie – something that could go on for a decade for some swing voters. But hey, there’s a short term boost in support. So in the name of a short term boost there is a burn through of trust that in some cases its taken thirty years to build.
And that’s what’s happened to the country’s finances. We are in a deep and nasty hole, and that’s because we have been spending more than we tax in boom years and we’ve further increased spending when tax revenues have dived – meaning that one out of every four pounds that is spent by the government is borrowed. This will take at least a decade to get right, and that’s with a following wind. But hey, there’s a short term feeling of prosperity that boosts Labour’s support and wins them a few more seats.
